Sexual Health - The Facts

Looking after your sexual health is just part of looking after your health generally. You may need contraception, for example, possibly even emergency contraception, or testing or treatment for a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Your GP can help with most kinds of contraception, or you can go to a Sexual Health clinic for long term contraception, which is more effective than the pill or condoms alone.

Clinics also provide testing and treatment for STIs, including testing for HIV. In Birmingham Sexual Health services are provided by Umbrella, and are free and completely confidential for everyone.

To find out which services are available at each centre, please visit the Umbrella website or click HERE for a full list of Umbrella Clinics. An interactive map of Umbrella clinics can also be found on our Map of Services page HERE

The Umbrella website also has lots of useful information about all aspects of sexual health including: types of contraception, the different STIs and how to avoid them, and rape and sexual abuse. You can even order a self sampling STI test kit to use at home by clicking HERE.

The NHS Choices website is an excellent resource and their Sexual Health page contains detailed information on everything you need to know including:

  • Contraception Guide

  • STI's (sexually transmitted infections) - learn about the symptoms, where to get tests and treatment, and how to protect yourself

  • Fertility - including getting pregnant, fertility problems and IVF

  • Trans health – gender identity issues

  • Talking about sex – with your partner, children, teenager

  • Menopause - Everything you need to know about the menopause, including the effects on your body, how your GP can help you, and what you can do to relieve the symptoms.
